"You win some, you lose some….."

Fresh from a last over victory the previous day, Old Glossop 1st XI entertained local rivals Tintwistle in the Bissenden Cup on Sunday.

Losing the toss and being asked to take first knock, Donnelly and White both looked comfortable before an almighty mix up caused the run out of Donnelly for 16. White received some surly looks from Donnelly and was best advised to ‘stay out there’ for as long as he could !

Runs were flowing freely with White looking to drive anything full, and Paul Eyre at 3 continuing his good early season form with some punishing cuts off Barrow.

‘Nipper’ Harris (3 for 22) changed the state of the game with his slow spin claiming the wickets of Eyre and the James’ brothers, and with White falling at the other end to spinner Nield, Old Glossop were staring down the barrel at 65 for 5.

Andy King and Declan Hall played cautiously in tandem to move the total over 100 and with 10 overs remaining started to cut loose.

Hall (22) was then caught on the edge and Lenny Allsopp suffered the same fate to leave Old Glossop skipper Andy King to hold the innings together. Moving into the final few overs Andy King suffered the same fate as he had the previous day, being caught by his opposing skipper for a patient 43.

Some big hits by McGrail (18) moved Old Glossop to 177, and then the final ball (being a potential hat trick delivery by Simon Barrow) was inexplicably blocked by Cooper to leave many on the balcony scratching their heads but Cooper marching off defiantly with his wicket intact !

A flying start by Tintwistle saw them race to 50 without loss and the result seeming inevitable, until once again the run rate was stemmed by the slower option of Eyre and Hall.

Hall turned the game, removing the first four batsmen and finishing with 4 for 25 off 8 impressive overs. Eyre was equally as miserly and the game was back on with Tinsle 80 for 4 at the halfway point.

Injuries to both King and Allsopp meant that neither could bowl more than 5 overs apiece, and it was left to Cooper and Andy James to restrict the Tinsle batsmen.

Matthew Robinson (44) batted sensibly before becoming Andy James’ first victim and with few overs remaining the result was unclear. Brothers Simon and Rob Barrow picked up singles to take the match to the final over needing 7 to win.

Two further wickets to Andy James, and 6 runs to Tinsle tied the scores with 2 balls remaining, and unlike the previous day Old Glossop missed out with Nield scampering a single to take Tinsle into the next round.
