"Old Glossop slay the Trinity (Wholly)"
For all those who played rather than watched the Cup Final it was a fantastic first win of the season for Old Glossop 2nd XI, against local rivals Dinting.
All the talk from their local rivals was of a relegation threatened season for O.G.C.C. 2nd X1, but in this game Old Glossop finally came to the races in all departments.
Winning the toss Old Glossop skipper Cannon chose to bowl but due to a subsequent injury in the warm up this would end his input for the day. Dinting were accommodating enough to supply a replacement fielder which arguably strengthened Old Glossop in the field! and this appared to rub off with new edition Ally Gerrard mimicking Jonty Rhodes at his very best.
After a rapid start Dinting were kept in check by aging duo Mitchell (6-60) and Twist, who despite his advancing years bowled straight through for 4-51. Twist had been moaning about early season wickets being "unusually hard and good batting tracks and having nothing in it for the bowler", but after a quiet word in his skipper’s ear, got the pick of end's, being not only downhill, but dry aswell. Having said that with a mixture of his one pace leggies and seam up Dinting struggled to get him away, the only blot on the copybook was Stevens and Twist both dropping Dinting captain and opening bat Brightmore early on.
Brightmore was the only Dinting player to get to grips with the tricky conditions. After their good start Dinting's innings fizzled out at 144-9, both Parker's in the side dropping catches to let the last bowling point slip away.
In reply Old Glossop, with the other Parker in the clan Martyn (aka Airwolf) Parker missing because of his Saturday job as a pilot (!), got off to a steady start with Stevens (13) and Jon Wright (18) taking the heat out of Dinting's opening bowlers.
The loss of Steven's brought youngster Mikey Parker (68n.o) to the crease, and spurred on by his side bet with O.G. first team skipper, provided a fine exhibition of batting which was to provide crucial in seeing OG home.
Mikey was particularly punishing on Maltby, who with his own version of trundling was hit to all parts in a short spell. The opening bowlers were bought back and seemingly told to bounce out the young junior, and this was to prove fatal for Dinting as with Mikey now seeing the ball like a football they too were carved all over the ground.
Debutant Gerrard joined Parker jnr at the inevitable fall of Wright and showed promise throughout before being run out for a well made 25. Veteran Matt Parker (6 n.o) came to the crease to guide Old Glossop home by hitting the winning runs to register their first win of the season and a good 19 pts in a fiercely contested derby.
