Woeful batting costs OG dear

With the sun shining and the nearby carnival in Manor Park providing some musical accompaniment to the proceedings, Old Glossop 1st XI entertained New Mills in the Peak Sports Derbyshire & Cheshire league at the weekend.

A winning toss allowed Old Glossop to sit back and hopefully watch New Mills toil in the searing heat in anticipation of a healthy total on a hard batting track.

However, on the day no single Old Glossop batsman seemed willing to occupy the crease and with a series of chances offered to New Mills, they were in no mood to refuse these and Old Glossop capitulated to 82 all out.

No fewer than seven batsmen were out caught, leaving New Mills cock a hoop and settling down to watch England perish in the World Cup.

Looking to defend 82 Old Glossop were desperate for an early breakthrough and this came with Lenny Allsopp bowling the unfortunate Whitchurch for a duck.

Lenny continued to bowl tightly and with Andy King extracting some life from the pitch at the other end, there was a hint of hope for OG.

Beating the bat at regular intervals OG didn’t get the luck they possibly deserved and with a couple of attempted run outs, additional overthrow runs were conceded.

Two more wickets fell to Lenny (3 for 34) to leave New Mills 52 for 3, but the one thing New Mills did have on their side was time, and after 20 overs they achieved their target.

A very disappointing display from Old Glossop against one of their near rivals.
