Eyre goes boundary crazy !

“Old Glossop started the season at home with a victory against Buxworth in what turned out to be a one sided affair. Winning the toss Buxworth skipper John Theyer had no hesitation in choosing to bowl first, albeit that the wicket appeared to be hard for the time of year. Old Glossop started tentatively with both Donnelly and White sizing up the Buxworth attack before White drove early at a Sanders delivery and was caught at cover. Old Glossop 25 for 1 and White unlucky to record an opening day duck !
Donnelly was joined by Paul Eyre and together they continued to score freely before Donnelly was given LBW to Theyer. Old Glossop 48 for 2. Andy James batting at four, built a partnership with Eyre which effectively ended Buxworth’s hopes of a victory. A century partnership full of power strokes from both batsmen ended with Andy James being impressively caught on the boundary for a well earned 44. Paul Eyre continued with his attack on all the Buxworth bowlers and now joined by Old Glossop skipper Andy King, went onto record an impressive opening day ton (103) before mistiming one and being caught at mid off.
An impressive knock, but even more so given the fact that it was the first day of the season. 90 of Paul’s 103 runs came in boundaries, a fact not overlooked by the Old Glossop fine committee ! |
Andy King, less fluent than James and Eyre, scored 23 before being stumped to the Buggy off spinner, and with Steve James and Lenny Allsopp finishing the innings both not out, Old Glossop recorded 214 for 5 in their 45 overs. That elusive 6th batting point just out of reach on the day.
Unfortunately for them, Buggy’s reply never really got started with them losing early wickets and never settling against the Old Glossop attack of Cooper (3 for 25), Hall (3 for 18) and Allsopp (3 for 1).
Only Leatherbarrow (33) looked like making any in roads into the Old Glossop total and with half the overs remaining Old Glossop wrapped up the victory with Paul Eyre completing a memorable personal display with the final wicket, with Buggy 69 all out.
21 points for Old Glossop, and 2 for the unfortunate Buggy. Just one of them days for them, and we all have them !
